Romke is thinking 'bout Tamron, Sony has a stake in Tamron. Prices are high, but you get what you pay for. To me they have struck the perfect balance between resolution, color rendering and microcontrast, without getting the "clinical" look that Leica glass often has imo. Not perfect for everybody, but well adapted to Sony bodies and the features offered. What i do care about is how they render and as such they (the FF lenses) are very good. I do not care where and by whom the lenses are manufactured and what badge is on it. That can only mean they both get something out of it. Whatever the reason, Sony and Zeiss have this cooperation and seem to enjoy it, given the fact that the contract has been renewed recently for another period of time.
The ZS/ZF/ZE just have their own classic Zeiss rendering which indeed is different from the Nikon or Canon rendering. That would explain the different rendering compared to the ZS/ZF/ZE lenses. Not especially the "classic Zeiss look" - but a rendering that more or less fits in with other lenses available for the alpha mount. Maybe the ZA range of Zeiss lenses are designed in such a way that the Sony rendering requirements are met. So by whatever virtue I think that reading between the lines Zeiss keep their up to date designs for themselves & Sony have access (in whatever form) to these older Contax designs & can update them to whatever they see fit.ĭoes it really matter, not really, as the rendering from Zeiss lenses will always be superior. The only real question mark that I really have is that if you look into it deeply, the Sony lenses share a lot with the old Contax zeiss lenses. Who wouldn't want to have Zeiss in their lens factory?
I think its a win win win situation all around. Zeiss have put the quality control/procedures in place, so whats to stop other members of the workforce being trained in these processes & then carrying them over to standard lens production (which they must be in some form or another). I actually think this very much a positive. They provide the optical design to the lens & they have given Sony factory guidance/certification in setting up/producing the lenses to the Zeiss spec & quality control. When I emailed Zeiss directly (about 18 months ago now), they responded saying that the lenses aren't made by Zeiss.
